A Sunburst Mirror

I'm still working on the kids bathroom. It started with a little easy project of board and batten. But then I didn't like the green in the bathroom anymore. So Matt, the wonderful husband that he is, painted it for me. Now it's so pretty. But I still can't show it to you yet. I'm putting the finishing touches on it. Hopefully....fingers crossed....toes crossed....I can show you this weekend! But for now, here is something I am putting in the bathroom.

Sunburst mirrors are everywhere now! Some you can find for decent prices and others are way too expensive. I figured I would just make my own. Grand total for my fancy smancy mirror $6! Here's how I made it. Pay close attention because it's really difficult (said in my most sarcastic voice).

I bought the round mirror at Hobby Lobby for $3. I used a 40% off coupon to save $2. Also, at Hobby Lobby I purchased 2 bags of clothes pins for $1.50 each. Again, I used 40% off coupons. I spray painted the clothes pins in RustOleum Metallic Gold.


Before I spray painted the clothes pins I put about half the pins on the mirror to make sure I liked where they would be placed.


As a guide I used a cereal bowl to place the clothes pins. I played around with different size bowls until I found the one I liked. Using a q-tip I put super glue down in between the opening of the pins. Then I slid the clothes pin on the mirror. When you take the bowl off you will have a perfect circle.

Keep going all the way around until you are finished. Let it sit overnight just to make sure the glue dries well. I hot glued a picture hook to the back the next day.


There you have it folks. A DIY sunburst mirror that will look so pretty in the bathroom. You could use the other kind of clothes pins as well. But I preferred this look. Stay tuned for the reveal of the bathroom soon.

Father's Day

How many wives can say that their husband's wanted a blender for Father's Day? I can!! Our blender died last week so we needed a new fancy one. It had a good 6 year run though!

At Matt's office they bought these fancy blenders call Ninja Blenders. Matt was in love at first blend!! Even before our blender killed over Matt would say he wanted a Ninja Blender. I didn't want to get him a blender for Father's Day. Lame!! He deserved something more with all that he has done. But I asked Matt if he could choose between a blender and a leaf blower and he chose the blender.

Ok done! Your wish is my command! Behold our new blender! This thing kicks some serious blender butt. I made a smoothie yesterday morning for breakfast and it was Oh.My.Gosh.Yum-O!!!

I made Matt a delicious breakfast as well for Father's Day. It has all the necessities. Bacon, eggs, cheese, and biscuits. Doesn't get more perfect than that!

We went to church where Levi sang a primary song on stage by himself. I had to walk him up there but he stayed up there for the whole song. We were so proud of Levi. Amazingly, after church we were all able to get naps. Wow! That hasn't happened in a long time.

This Father's Day was a great one. I love Matt more than anything. He is a wonderful father to our children. He cares so much about all of us and will do anything for us. Matt sacrifices so much to provide for our family. We are truely blessed.

Daddy time

Back in May our ward had a father and son campout! Matt took Levi and they had a blast. This was Levi's first real time camping. He's slept in a tent in our backyard but this was for real camping! They roasted hot dogs, which Levi ate with a stick, and flew airplanes. Matt and Levi did end up coming home in the middle of the night though. It's a good thing we live close to where they were camping.




While at the campout Levi was able to try fishing for the first time. They didn't catch anything but now Levi loves to go! Matt takes him to our neighborhood pond and he's done very well.



Here he is with his first fish!! I love the excitement that Levi has when he comes home. Even though the fish he catches are small he thinks they are sooo big! He will talk about his big fish for days.

Matt and Levi have spent a lot of time together doing lots of fishing and other "man" stuff outside. I love that Levi loves to be with his daddy and help out with everything. Hopefully this weekend we will be able to take Levi to see the new movie Cars 2. This time mommy is coming along!

Mirror, mirror on the wall

I really don't like it when projects don't go my way. I get these ideas in my head and I convince my husband that they are going to be soooo easy. And then something happens and the easy project turns to frustration, frustration to anger, anger to me walking away from it for 6 months. Ok...maybe not that long!

I wanted to have a big chunky mirror on my buffet in our dining room. I had a vision of how it was going to look. It was supposed to be easy. We had a huge mirror that we took out of our master bathroom and had stored in the garage. I wanted that mirror cut down to 2 ft x 3 ft. Easy enough right?? Wrong!! Let's just say cutting a mirror yourself without practice doesn't work that well. We had to find another mirror at the ReStore.

To spare you all the frustrating details here's how we finally got our mirror to work. We glued the mirror down to a piece of underlayment from Home Depot. We had Home Depot cut the piece down to the size I wanted.



Because the mirror from the ReStore was just a tad bit bigger than my original size we had to glue the frame on to the mirror itself. My original plan was to glue the frame to the underlayment and if you do that it will work so much easier. More on that in a bit.

So after gluing the frame to the mirror we had to hang it. I wanted the mirror to be angled and not just hanging there on the wall. I used picture hanging wire (Is that the technical name?) and picture hooks to get this monster up. Because the underlayment was so thin we didn't want the screws holding the hooks to go through to the mirror so we used another small piece of wood to hold the hooks. Does that make sense? Hopefully it does.

In the original plan the mirror was just going to rest on the buffet and the picture hooks and wire were not going to be needed. This mirror weighs a ton and when the frame was glued to it all the weight was resting on the frame. That would cause the frame to come unglued from the mirror. So we had to come up with plan B. And this worked. Now all the weight is on the screws in the wall that are in studs.

Here it is all pretty and finished.

When it rains....IT POURS!!

Over the last month I have had contractors come out and give estimates on replacing our roof, fence, and windows. All of this has been damaged by storms this year! It's been a crazy storm season here in Texas. Just when I finally get all the bids I need for everything another storm came through here last night at about 9:30.

Remember our wonderful patio that Matt worked so hard on last summer in the 1000 degree heat? Remember the awesome deal we got on the patio furniture and the canopy?

Well, here is our canopy as of this morning.

That is our neighbor's house!! The legs busted through his roof! This is a view from the front yard.

This is where the cloth cover landed. Our patio cover is totally gone! The crazy thing is that this canopy probably weighs at least 250 pounds. Our patio table didn't even budge! The chairs were blown over but the table didn't move an inch. CRAZY!!

I was standing at the patio door when the canopy blew away. It was there one second and gone the next. The wind picked it up just like it was a feather blowing in the wind!

Hopefully our neighbors don't hate us! I'm thinking we need to move now! Anyone need a house?? I think this will go in the Before and After category for sure.

Baked Creamy Chicken Taquitos

I made these tonight and they were so YUMMY!! You have to try these!

1/3 cup (3 oz) cream cheese
1/4 cup green salsa
1 tbsp fresh lime juice
1/2 tsp cumin
1 tsp chili powder
1/2 tsp onion powder
1/4 tsp granulated garlic or garlic powder
3 tbsp cilantro
2 tbsp sliced green onions (optional)
2 cups shredded cooked chicken (I used 1 can of canned chicken)
1 cup grated pepperjack cheese
small corn or flour tortillas
cooking spray

Heat oven to 425. Line a baking sheet with foil and lightly coat with cooking spray.

Heat cream cheese in the microwave for about 20-30 seconds so it’s soft and easy to stir. Add green salsa, lime juice, cumin, chili powder, onion powder and granulated garlic. Stir to combine and then add cilantro and green onions. Add chicken and cheese and combine well.

Work with a few tortillas at a time and heat in the microwave until they are soft enough to roll without cracking. It helps to place them between damp paper towels. Usually 20-30 seconds will do it.

Place 2-3 tbsp of chicken mixture on the lower third of a tortilla, keeping it about 1/2 inch from the edges.

Then roll it up as tight as you can.


Place seam side down on the baking sheet. Lay all of the taquitos on the baking sheet and make sure they are not touching each other. Spray the tops lightly with cooking spray or an oil mister.

Place pan in oven and bake for 15-20 minutes or until crisp and the ends start to get golden brown.

Dip ‘em in salsa, sour cream, or guacamole.

Mother's Day

This Mother's Day was a great day for me. My wonderful husband let me pretend I'm asleep sleep in and made breakfast for me. Levi colored me a beautiful picture as well. I knew this day was going to be a difficult one given the fact of recent events. Matt being the kind and thoughtful person he is, bought me a memory box for Taylor. I can put the 1 picture we have of Taylor in there along with the picture Levi colored. It was the perfect gift and I couldn't have asked for anything better.

After church I tried to get a Mother's Day picture with the boys but it was just about impossible. But sometimes you just have to take what you can get. Jax was all over the place and Levi would not look the right way. There was no time to pull out the real camera to take pictures. I was lucky just to get these with the cell phone. Oh well. Maybe next year! Man, I love these kids!!
